(1001) From Encoding to Retention to Recognition. MICHAEL J. WENGER & ANGELINA M. COPELAND, University of Notre Dame—The perception of meaningful, organized visual forms, such as human faces, has been hypothesized to result in an encoded representation that possesses a high degree of dependence among the constituent elements. In contrast, the perception of such forms as common objects is thought to produce encoded representations that possess much less dependence. Previous tests of these ideas (Wenger & Copeland, 2002; Wenger & Ingvalson, 2002, 2003) suggest that shifts in decisional criteria, rather than dependence on the underlying sensory or mnemonic information, may be critical. Here, we present results of a series of experiments designed to explore how such shifts in performance evolve, from the time of first encoding, through retention, to eventual use in recognition. Using both latency and response frequency information, we develop and constrain a dynamic model for perception, retention, and use of this visual information.

Deficits in other-race face recognition: no evidence for encoding-based effects.

The other-race effect (ORE) in face recognition is typically observed in tasks which require long-term memory. Several studies, however, have found the effect early in face encoding (Lindsay, Jack, & Christian, 1991; Walker & Hewstone, 2006). In 6 experiments, with over 300 participants, we found no evidence that the recognition deficit associated with the ORE reflects deficits in immediate enc...

The Effect of Teaching Critical Reading Strategies on EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Retention

This study was an attempt to investigate whether teaching critical reading strategies had any significant effect on intermediate EFL learners’ vocabulary retention. To fulfill the purpose of this study, 72 male and female students within the age range of 17 to 32 years studying at Farzan and Farzanegan language schools in Tehran at intermediate level were selected from a total number of 114 par...

Eye fixations in prediction of recognition and recall.

Eye fixations were recorded at viewing of picture-label stimuli presented under either recall or recognition instructions; both retention tests were administered. Ss performed substantially better on the retention test of which they were informed, indicating differential encoding of the same stimuli in anticipation of test type. There was no correlation between recognition and recall of items, ...

Encoding Processes in Recognition and Recall

The present experiments demonstrate that picture-word stimuli are differentially encoded in anticipation of a recognition test than in anticipation of a free-recall test. Subjects perform better on the retention test of which they have been informed, and different information from the stimuli is used to pass each test. These findings cannot be attributed to stimulus selection nor to pure pictor...

Chiral recognition mechanisms of four β-blockers by HPLC with Amylose Chiral Stationary Phase

The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) enantioseparation of four β-blocking agents metoprolol, bisoprolol, propranolol and atenolol was performed on amylose tris-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) chiral stationary phase using n-hexane-ethanol-diethylamine (DEA) as the mobile phase and related chiral recognition mechanisms were discussed. Enantiomeric separation of the fourβ-blockers was ...
